Meeting the
Challenge to Families
The true strength of a nation is
in the strength of its families. Yet today, families are
under duress as never before. Drug abuse among the young has
skyrocketed; the very definition of marriage itself is now being
debated, causing great confusion; the divorce rate hovers at 50%
and out of wedlock births have reached almost 70% in some of our
communities. As we continue into the 21st Century, the
problem of the deterioration of the family is the greatest
challenge that we face.
Throughout our history, from the
founding of our country, through the Civil War, the Great
Depression, and the two World Wars, Americans, with the help of
God, have met and overcome every challenge that we have
faced. It is important that we do so once again, not only
for ourselves but for the world as whole. America is the
leader in the world economically and technologically.
Shouldn't we also present to the world an outstanding example of
healthy families?
The true strength of a nation is
in the strength of its families. Just as our Founders sought the
essential principles - "self-evident truths" - that are
the basis of personal freedom and individual rights, so now we
must seek the essential principles that undergird our most
important institution - the family. Such principles can
guide the renewal and strengthening of our families. And the
interdependence of the family is mirrored in the growing
interdependence of the world community.
Family is the great common
denominator the world over. This essential human longing
knows no boundaries of religion, race or nationality. It is
our conviction that today we have a challenge and an opportunity
as never before. We must address the challenges posed by
social trends that undermine the family. And we must seize
the opportunity to build a family friendly culture, as the basis
of our national strength, and as a bridge to the rest of the
world. The American Family Coalition invites you to join us
in addressing this challenge and opportunity.
